Email Based Referrals - They Still Matter

News that email is dead always surprises me. Search for the phrase “Email is Dead” and you are bound to find myriad articles with the same message; social media is in, email is out, and if you want to market your company’s products and services, shift marketing dollars out of email based initiatives and into Facebook, Twitter, Digg, and other Web 2.0 tools. While I won’t be foolish enough to vehemently deny the fundamental transformation of the web from a static medium to a participatory one, the data about email-based referrals we’ve collected across SiphsMail subscribers is simply overwhelming. Here’s a graph of sharing statistics across our network.
Across our network, email based content forwards are on the order of 10x greater than any other medium. Facebook comes a close second! Given the data we’re seeing on our end, news of email’s death is amusing at best.

Email & Your Business
If your website has a blog, is an e-commerce destination, or is otherwise an integral component to your business’s marketing efforts, it must, absolutely must contain an email based sharing tool. And shouldn’t those email forwards, which in web 2.0 speak equate to “social recommendations,” include your logo, your custom marketing message, and shouldn’t you be able to track it all effortlessly? Remember, every touch point with a new or exisiting customer leaves a lasting impression. Why not leave a great one?
